on any elevated surfaces throughout the afternoon. that includes atlanta. so deicing will also cause significant delays. everywhere in white has a chance for some snow. advisory level snow usually means about 1 to 3 inches. on the radar, it's a very wide system, but not strong. not going to be heavy amounts of snow. but the snow will start soon in chicago, snowing in many areas from milwaukee to green bay. and then all of this heads east during the day today. again, not blockbuster snow amounts. at most we're talking in the appalachians possibly 3 to 5 inch, but most areas from philadelphia southwards town through virginia back through ohio, you'll be dealing with the possibility of again 1 to 2 fluffy inches of snow. the weekend forecast looks a lot quieter and also begins to do that warm up. i'll give you that forecast a little later. >>> up next, medical science realizes star trek tractor beams. plus layoffs ahead for the airlines. why are the brits blowing up these trains? well, the answer may surprise you. and what to watch for on wall street this final friday in the month of ja

of a lack of space. officials at the centers for disease control and prevention in atlanta report flu has killed 18 children through the end of last year. that number they say is almost certainly gone up. and the current number of flu cases already matches the peak of many previous years. this time scientists say the worst of the flu season is likely to come. the city of boston declared a public health emergency because the mayor reported some 700 confirmed flu cases in boston alone compared to just 70 during the last flu season. now, the city will offer free flu shots and health officials today urged it is not too late to protect yourself. >> there is is plenty of flu vaccine and people can get it at clinics. local boards of health. pharmacies are well-stocked with vaccine and of course your healthcare provider. >> shepard: eastern pennsylvania, teams have set up temporary flu clinic inside these outdoor tents cut down waiting time in the emergency room. in the chicago area some hospitals went into bypass mode meaning they asked paramedics to other facilities if they could do so safely.

is outside atlanta tonight in adairsville, georgia, where one powerful tornado has already torn through town. >> reporter: an hour north of atlanta, an amazing picture. the sky was falling. >> we've got debris now flying to the left and center of this system. the sirens have been going off here. the wind is kicking up, along with the rain. again, a funnel crossing the interstate here in adairsville. >> reporter: witnesses here say the tornado was on the ground, churning through homes, office buildings and factories for more than 20 minutes. scientists think it was an ef-2 or greater, with wind speeds more than 125 miles an hour. >> please take safe shelter for us right now. get in that center portion of your home. a basement if you have it. >> reporter: in calhoun, georgia, homes were leveled. at this factory in adairsville, workers scrambled for cover. neighbors had to rescue families trapped inside their crumbled homes. one man was killed. >> there was no warnings, no sirens, no nothing. >> reporter: we talked with the family of the man who died. they were at home looking for a lost pet. j

. sanjay gupta is in atlanta. what are you expecting to hear? >> elizabeth cohen has been working through the night on getting these numbers. one number, which is important and what we expected. widespread outbreak of the flu. 47 states, up from 41 states with an outbreak of the flu. some good news. the number of states with high levels of activity has gone down from 29 now to 24. two additional deaths in young people, from 18 to 20. but there may be some relief as you say in sight. we are at epidemic threshold. that basically means we are seeing more cases than we expected to see at this time year. big question? will those cases stay elevated or will they start to come down across the country? >> we keep hearing, get a flu shot, get a flu shot. some got our flu shots early. yes, i'm gloating. if you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, is there enough vaccine? >> i think so. i crunched some numbers on this overnight. may be some spot shortages, but general numbers, take aook at how many of these vaccines were specifically manufactured, 135 million, bottom number, 112 million vaccinated. not
